Can altered auditory information affect planning? Evidence from music performance

چکیده

In the EXPLAN architecture (target article), altered recurrent auditory information (ARAI) is presumed to influence the execution but not planning of speech. This conclusion stems from evidence that the influence of ARAI is limited to timing relationships between perception and action. However, recent evidence documents disruption of musical keyboard performance from certain manipulations of perceived pitches, even when sounds are synchronized with key presses. These results lead to a proposed extension of EXPLAN.

Effects of hearing the past, present, or future during music performance.

Three experiments were performed to explore the effects of mismatches between actions (key-presses) and the contents of auditory feedback (pitch events) during music performance. Pianists performed melodies from memory during altered auditory feedback that was synchronized with key-presses but matched the pitch of other sequence events. Feedback direction was manipulated by presenting pitches t...

Selective deficits in human audition: evidence from lesion studies

The human auditory cortex is the gateway to the most powerful and complex communication systems and yet relatively little is known about its functional organization as compared to the visual system. Several lines of evidence, predominantly from recent studies, indicate that sound recognition and sound localization are processed in two at least partially independent networks. Evidence from human...

Music Training and Education Slow the Deterioration of Music Perception Produced by Presbycusis in the Elderly

The perception of music depends on the normal function of the peripheral and central auditory system. Aged subjects without hearing loss have altered music perception, including pitch and temporal features. Presbycusis or age-related hearing loss is a frequent condition in elderly people, produced by neurodegenerative processes that affect the cochlear receptor cells and brain circuits involved...

Context and meter enhance long-range planning in music performance

Neural responses demonstrate evidence of resonance, or oscillation, during the production of periodic auditory events. Music contains periodic auditory events that give rise to a sense of beat, which in turn generates a sense of meter on the basis of multiple periodicities. Metrical hierarchies may aid memory for music by facilitating similarity-based associations among sequence events at diffe...
